Extension Health Educator

Position Overview

As part of MSU Extension (MSUE) and the Health and Nutrition Institute (HNI), this position provides leadership and expertise in social-emotional-behavioral health with a focus on counties located within the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula.

In this position, you will provide programming focused on mindfulness, stress reduction, alternatives to anger, chronic pain self-management, opioid misuse prevention, healthy aging, and living well with diabetes. In addition, you will act as a liaison between MSUE professionals and will coordinate programming to Mackinac Island on multiple programs as it relates to community needs.

You will identify, design, implement and evaluate programs that meet outreach needs related to health and well-being to be responsive to mental health and community behavioral health needs of the community. Through your leadership, you will implement Dining with Diabetes, a program for diabetes self-care, Stress Less with Mindfulness and other mindfulness programs, and PATH (personal action toward health), a course that includes presentations to address chronic pain management and opioid misuse prevention.

Through collaboration in grant-funded efforts, engagement with community members, and dissemination of research through various methods, including in-person and multimedia programming and written communications, you will implement programs that lead to public knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors contributing to healthier lifestyles and health equity. You will also develop, produce, and deliver education that contributes to system changes, policies, and environmental changes. You will use evidence-based sources for outreach materials with messaging and content that is accessible, inclusive, and is consistent with HNI messaging.

Your work will include close collaboration with MSU colleagues, as well as the diverse network of partner groups. Through this work, you will collaborate with the HNI Health team and will act as a statewide point of contact to provide support for health programs on Mackinac Island, and in surrounding counties.

Although negotiable, there will be space available for this position to work from the Mackinac Island Health Center.
