New, Exciting COMMUNICATIONS CONTEST opens for registrations today!

***Sign up for one or all of the communication contests that start today and run through July 24th.*** From cloverbuds to senior age divisions and a section for out-of-state participants as well.

1st Contest - Prepared Public Speaking- Youth register, pick their own topic, record their speech and submit it via Facebook by June 19th.

2nd Contest- Predetermined Topic- Youth register and then are given a choice between three topics as early as June 15th, they will record their speech and submit the video via Facebook by June 26th .

3rd Contest- Impromptu – Youth register, then the week of June 29th contestants will be sent a zoom link and call time. They will connect via zoom and be given three fun easy topics to choose from. Contestants will wait in a waiting room to prepare their speech, which requires zero research, once time is up contestants are pulled into the main zoom room to perform their speech. This contest will be followed by a question/ answer session from the judges.  This is fun, interactive contest with simple fun topics so if you love public speaking or just want to give it a try this is fun place to start.

4th Contest- Demonstration – Youth register, then will prepare their demonstrations, record them and upload their videos by July 10th.

5th Contest – Clowning/Acting- July 13-24th. This contest will give new life to the art of clowning in 4-H and has added an acting section as well.  Watch for great resources and classes to be shared prior to the week of this contest and give clowning/acting a try even if you have never done it before.

This is a free contest with prizes to be mailed after the contest. Medals will be awarded for Gold(1st), Silver(2nd), and Bronze(3rd) winners as well as award certificates to the top 10 in each category and participation certificates to everyone.

SHOW WHERE YOU ARE


The Kalkaska County 4-H Leadership Association is hosting a virtual lamb show to help prepare youth for their virtual fairs this summer!  Participants can enter showmanship, market, virtual buyer’s letter, and educational display/presentation categories.  (Buyer’s letters can be any species!).  All participants will be provided written feedback from judges. There are age divisions for cloverbuds, and a class for youth with special needs. Prizes will be mailed after the show is completed.  Lambs do not need to be fitted.  Please see  https://www.facebook.com/showwhereyouare/ for details! Registration must be postmarked by June 16th!

YQCA Web Based Certification – Flash Sale!


Given that all face-to-face Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) trainings have been cancelled for the next few weeks, during the month of April, YQCA will offer a $3 discount for all online training. Those wishing to take advantage of this discounted rate will need to purchase $9 web-based training coupons from YQCA

Instructions and coupon order forms can be found in the documents tab under Miscellaneous. Please note this is the only way to receive the discounted price. For more information on YQCA’s self-paced online training visit yqca.org

Note virtual trainings cannot be conducted by MSU Extension staff, as we are not authorized to deliver YQCA training virtually.

Goat Workshop

Goat Workshop

Saturday, September 10

4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Hillsdale County Fairgrounds / Large Animal Barn

Learn fitting and showing your goat, as well as health and care of your goats. We are asking that you not bring your own goat to the workshop.

The workshop is open to youth age 9 and up, Clover Buds with a parent, guardian or older sibling, please.

HILLSDALE COUNTY 4-H HORSE SHOWMANSHIP CLINIC



This clinic is open to all Hillsdale County 4-H kids
  • Covering the basics of equine showmanship
  • Space for up to 12 kids at this clinic
  • Please come with your horse, showmanship leads, halters and questions.
  • RSVP is required.
