2014 Irrigation Workshop

MSU Extension is hosting the 2014 Irrigation workshop on March 17 to discuss irrigation and water management in agriculture. Workshops will provide information relevant to all irrigators, including growers of field crops, fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals (2 RUP credits).
Spend the morning learning about water rights, the responsibilities and requirements of large volume water users; the important relationship between soil and water, and best management practices for irrigators. Presentations will highlight how and why to schedule irrigation, and the various tools available to growers to help them make irrigation decisions.

In the afternoon, choose to attend sessions focusing on either overhead or drip irrigation.
  • The overhead session will provide information for irrigators on where to get large volume water; how to avoid well conflicts, and irrigation impacts on plant diseases and food safety. Hear more about utilizing chemigation and fertigation, as well as tips on where it fits and what is needed. Finish the day by learning the pros and cons of irrigation scheduling tools, see demonstrations of these tools and MAEAP and NRCS resources for irrigators.
  • The drip session will begin with an introduction to plasticulture and drip irrigation systems and will focus on system design, use and maintenance. Learn more about using irrigation systems for frost protection of small fruit, as well as drip irrigation and its effect on plant disease. Finish the day by learning the pros and cons of select drip irrigation scheduling tools and see demonstrations of these tools.

This workshop will be held at Cabela’s (White Tail & Moose rooms) in Dundee, Mi. Onsite registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the program starting at 9:00 a.m. The program will conclude at 4:30 p.m. and will include lunch. Registration is $50 per person (includes lunch, refreshments and materials) by March 10th. On site registration is $75 per person.
